LOOKING FOR DARK MODE?

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts. (Details are in a footnote following the first-level walkthrough.) I have also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.

LEVEL 5: THE SUBMARINE (Remaster)

Pickups: 18, including Crowbar, Pistols, Shotgun, 2 Batteries, 2 Keys, Aqualung, Suit Console, and 3 Golden Rose Secrets*

Cutscene: Admiral Yarofev and two of his crewmen discover Lara in the cargo hold. She tries to warn Yarofev of the risk he's taking by accepting the gangster's mission, but he won't listen. The sailors then escort Lara to a makeshift brig.

IMPORTANT: The Lara's weapons have been confiscated, but you still have whatever flares and health items you collected up to this point. If you want the "I Am Invincible!" achievement/trophy, you can't use any medipacks during this level. So save in a new slot at the beginning. If things are going well, quick-save now and then, but try to keep at least one or two backup saves in case you need to replay the more challenging sections. Also, a few areas remain inaccessible until you return to the submarine in a later level.

BUNKS: Find the broken handrail (one of four) between the bunks. Press Action to pull it off for use as a CROWBAR (1) (100/239). Go around the corner and pick up some flares (2) (101/239). Then use your new tool to pry off the grate directly opposite where the flares were. (screenshots)

VENTILATION DUCTS: Enter the ducts and turn right. Crawl through the low opening to a ladder. Climb to the top. Crouch and crawl backwards toward the edge of the open shaft with a broken fan down below. Climb down into the shaft. About halfway down there's an opening on the left. When Lara is level with the opening, climb to the left as far as you can and let go to land just inside the opening. Inside is a golden rose (3) (102/239) (SECRET #1, 13/36). Take it then walk to the edge of the opening and take a standing jump to grab the ladder on the opposite wall of the shaft. Climb to the top. The small opening ahead is empty, so traverse around to the right. Pull up and crawl through to another ladder. (screenshots)

Climb the ladder to another deep shaft with live wires dangling above it. (The wires are just decoration, but Lara will die if she falls into the shaft.) Crawl backwards and hang from the edge of the shaft. Traverse left to the middle opening. Pull up and crawl through to a trapdoor. Stand at the edge of the trapdoor and press Action to open it. STOREROOM: Drop down onto a crate. Search the shelves and drawers to find a small medipack and a BATTERY (-) (4-5) (103-104/239). The door is locked so climb back up through the trapdoor. (screenshots)

VENTILATION DUCTS (again): Crawl backwards and hang from the edge of the shaft below the live wires. Traverse around to the left and pull up. Climb the nearby ladder. Ahead you can glimpse the CONTROL ROOM through the slats. Crawl through the low passageway. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Lara once again overhears the gangster, Mikhailov, speaking with the admiral. They have reached the sunken U-boat, and Mikhailov orders Yarofev to ready his divers, though he won't say what they're looking for. The admiral informs the gangster that they've apprehended a spy but he doesn't intend to kill her. Because he's not an animal. Mikhailov says he'll take care of Lara when he returns.

Continue through the duct (the slats are on Lara's right) to a ladder leading down. Climb down and crawl on to another trapdoor. Open it and drop through. (screenshots)

KITCHEN: Watch out for the lit stove burners. If Lara stands on them, she'll catch fire. And be sure to move quietly. If the cook (not counted as an official kill) on duty notices Lara he'll attack with his knife, and Lara has no weapons to defend herself. Hop down off the counter and walk around behind the cook. Stay close to the stove so Lara is out of the cook's line of sight. When Lara is behind the cook, but not touching him, press Action to attack. (If you have Action Indicators set to 'On' in the Options menu, you'll see the hand icon when Lara is close enough.) (screenshots)

Cutscene: Lara whacks the cook with her handy handrail.

NOTE: If you accidentally attract the cook's attention and he attacks, either reload or climb up into the duct. Crawl through to the next spot where Lara can stand up. Then crawl back to the open trapdoor and re-enter the kitchen. The cook should be back at work and you can try again.

When the cook fades away, he drops a massive BRONZE KEY (6) (105/239). Use it to open the metal door. (The heavy wooden door doesn't open yet.) Behind the metal door is another STOREROOM. Search the shelves and drawers to find a SILVER KEY (7) (106/239) and a pair of PISTOLS (8) (107/239). Use this key to unlock the wooden door. (screenshots)

IMPORTANT: If you're after the "I Am Invincible!" achievement/trophy, you may want to quick-save here just in case. You'll need to get through several fights without healing.

MESS HALL: Draw those borrowed pistols because 2 of Mikhailov's goons (1-2) (27-28/62) are waiting inside on the right. If you enter cautiously, you can get a lock on one of them and hop back firing. Lure him into the kitchen as you continue shooting. Then run forward, target the second man, and hop back firing. With good timing and a little luck, you can get through with no damage. Move out into the MESS HALL and go to the right. The door to the HEAD, in the far corner opens, and a sailor (3) (29/62) emerges. Again, target him and and hop back firing. If he's actively pursuing Lara, he's less likely to start shooting. He drops a box of shotgun shells (9) (108/239) when he dies. There's nothing of interest in the HEAD, but you're welcome to go in and wash up. I wouldn't use those filthy toilets, though. (screenshots)

CORRIDORS: Go through the other open doorway at the far end of the room. (Leave the hatch with the wheel for later.) Just ahead, the passage comes to a T. To the right is a swipe-card door. You have no card, so go left. Another gangster (4) (30/62) appears when you round the next corner. He won't follow Lara all the way back to the MESS HALL, but you can lure him to the T-intersection, stand in the MESS HALL doorway and step out, shoot, then step back. Lara should take little damage this way. Now head for the next intersection, where the gangster appeared. The door on the left only opens from the other side, so use the wheel to open the hatch on the right. Enter and climb the ladder. (screenshots)

CARGO HOLD: Continue to the hold, where 2 goons (5-6) (31-32/62) ambush Lara. You may be able to get a pistol lock on one of them and hop back along the corridor while firing. (If an enemy is pursuing Lara, he'll be less likely to shoot than if she's standing still.) When the first enemy falls, if the second hasn't come out into the corridor yet, run forward, target him, and again hop backward while firing. (screenshots)

One of the men drops a SHOTGUN (10) (109/239). You'll also find an AQUALUNG and large medipack (11-12) (110-111/239). Before leaving, use your crowbar to pry open the wooden crate near the entrance. Inside you'll find a golden rose (13) (112/239) (SECRET #2, 14/36). Return along the passageway, down the ladder, and back to the MESS HALL. (screenshots)

MESS HALL (again): Cross the room and turn the wheel to open the hatch in the far right corner. About halfway along the next corridor there's another STOREROOM on the right. The armed gangster (7) (33/62) inside is not inclined to follow Lara, but you can face the doorway, step out to target him, then side flip right and left while firing, until he falls. The shelves and drawers in the STOREROOM are empty. But you can climb onto the wooden crate to reach the trapdoor above. To open it, walk to the edge of the crate below the handle, then jump straight up to grab it. (screenshots)

YET MORE DUCTS: Pull up into the duct and crawl through to the third square grate in the floor. (If you reach the trapdoor, you've gone too far.) Here Lara can stand. Light a flare. (Or fire your pistols for a little illumination, or equip the binoculars and press Action for a light. Zoom in and out with Duck/Dash and stow the binoculars with the Draw Weapon button.) Look for an opening above on the right. Climb into it and retrieve another golden rose (14) (113/239) (SECRET #3, 15/36). Drop down, crawl through to the next trapdoor, open it, then save before dropping down into the next room. (screenshots)

ANOTHER STOREROOM: When Lara hits the floor, the door opens and a sailor (8) (34/62) comes to investigate. Two shotgun blasts at close range will take him down. Or, if you'd rather use pistols, get a lock on him, then move to the left of the door. Keep firing as he approaches. Search the drawers to find a BATTERY (+) (15) (114/239). (The shelves have nothing useful.) (screenshots)

Go through the door that just opened to emerge in the network of CORRIDORS near the MESS HALL. You still don't have a keycard for the swipe-card door ahead, so head left, then right. Pass the corridor leading back to the MESS HALL (on your left). Just ahead is a ladder down. (screenshots)

Climb down and advance around the next corner weapons ready. Another gangster (9) (35/62) approaches around the next corner. Either run forward and blast him twice with the shotgun or wait near the passageway leading to the ladder. Get a lock on the enemy as he rounds the corner, and side flip in and out of the corridor while firing. Lara should take little or no damage this way. Pick up the wideshot shells (16) (115/239) he drops. Then continue past the hatch with the wheel, through the door where the gangster emerged. (screenshots)

SLEEPING QUARTERS: This room is similar to the one where you began the level. Go between the rows of bunks and pick up a small medipack (17) (116/239) on the floor to the left. Then backtrack along the corridor and use the wheel to open the hatch. Take out the sailor (10) (36/62) standing guard in the TORPEDO ROOM. (Again, to minimize health loss, use the shotgun at close range or pistols while flipping side-to-side outside the door.) Proceed through the TORPEDO ROOM and climb the ladder to the level above. DIVING SUIT AREA: You're now in a short corridor with two doors on each side. To the left is an open hatch. There's a diving suit behind glass but no goodies. Turn the wheel to open the hatch on the right. Shoot the sailor (11) (37/62) inside. (You're almost done, so it's not as crucial now to conserve health.) Pick up his SUIT CONSOLE (18) (117/239). Continue along the passageway. Again, two hatches. Kill the gangster (12) (38/62) in the room behind the open hatch on the right. Use the wheel to open the other hatch and go inside. (screenshots)

The diving suit on the left is accessible. Position Lara facing the top half of the suit, close to it. Combine the SUIT CONSOLE and AQUALUNG and attach it to the suit (Action). Combine the (+) and (-) BATTERIES and insert them into the CONSOLE. Now you've got a working suit. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you missed any of these key items, you can go back for them now. See the footnote for details. If you completed the level without healing, the "I Am Invincible!" achievement/trophy unlocks after the next cutscene.

Cutscene: Lara remarks, "Time to turn the tables." She puts on the suit and rides the elevator down to the water.

*NOTES ON PICKUPS, SECRETS, AND KILLS: There are 239 pickups and approximately 62 kills in the entire game. The total number of pickups includes 36 golden rose secrets. All pickups are required for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy. Finding all secrets unlocks an achievement/trophy at the end of each level set (Rome, Russia, etc.) See the footnote following the STREETS OF ROME walkthrough for details on how these statistics are tracked in-game and in this walkthrough.
