STELLA'S TOMB RAIDER 1 REMASTERED WALKTHROUGH

LOOKING FOR DARK MODE?

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered updates are in progress but will take time. For levels that have not yet been updated, I will continue to link to the ORIGINAL WALKTHROUGHS, which cover all the basics. Please check the introductory notes at the start of the first level for info on my process, modern vs. classic tank controls, etc. This guide covers most but not all possible achievements/trophies. Follow this link for the archived classic Great Pyramid walkthrough.

OBJECTIVES: Kill the big beastie. Find Natla, who has apparently survived her fall, and bump her off as well. Then get out of town.

LEVEL START - GIANT MUTANT BOSS: As soon as the level loads, the massive egg hatches, releasing a humongous, legless mutant (1). Quite obviously, the first thing you'll need to do is kill it, preferably without letting it grab Lara or knock her off the platform. There are a number of strategies for doing this. Some prefer to use the Uzis and circle around the boss while firing, mostly one-handed. Or, run/jump/roll from corner to corner, in a box pattern, as the mutant lumbers after. Some prefer the shotgun, since fewer rounds are needed to bring the creature down (about 800 rounds of Uzi fire, versus about 25 shotgun blasts). Any weapon works. Some just take longer. Be sure to save a few magnum rounds for the end of the level, since you'll need them to unlock an achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

Needless to say, you don't want to hop around too much or you'll risk going over the edge and falling into the lava pool far, far below. And, for the most part you don't have to, since the mutant moves pretty slowly. But do keep moving. If Lara stands still, the big guy can easily snag her and toss her around like a rag doll. When the mutant's health bar is reduced to zero, stop shooting so you don't waste ammo. Back away if possible and wait for it to explode.

If you're like me and don't have as much manual dexterity as maybe you once did, try this alternative strategy: When the level loads, draw your weapons of choice and get in a few shots as you run a few steps to the left or right, roll, holster guns, and drop back and grab the edge of the platform. Now wait for the mutant to lose interest and go back to the door. When it does, pull up and shoot at it until it approaches. Then holster your guns, hop back to dangle again, and repeat. (screenshots)

This can take a while, depending on which weapons you're using. Also, if you hang in the wrong place, the mutant can reach under and grab Lara. The best spots seem to be the corners farthest from the door (northeast or southeast), with Lara's back to the side (north or south) walls. If you hang there and wait for the mutant to go back to the wall before pulling up, it then takes the beast longer to move toward you, so you'll get more shots in each time. I've also never seen the mutant try to grab Lara here. One warning: If you let the mutant get too close before Lara goes over the edge, it may start pounding the floor and refuse to move away. Either reload or try traversing along the edge toward the rear wall, then back to the outer corner. Lara will lose some health, presumably as a result of the mutant's stomping on her hands, but it should move off again. Then you can pull up, fire off a few rounds, and drop hang hang once more. Repeat until the boss's health bar is depleted. Stop shooting to conserve ammo. Then just wait for it to keel over and explode. (screenshots)

If you aren't playing New Game+, I also recommend saving the game in the middle of the fight if you're doing well. Then you won't have as far to go if you do get killed and have to reload. (Use a new slot, though, just in case something goes wrong.) When you defeat the big guy, the "Kind of Evolution on Steroids" achievement/trophy unlocks, and the exit door opens. Pick up the 6 sets of Uzi clips (1-6), divided among 4 piles in the corners of the platform, and head for the door. (screenshot)

NOTE: If you didn't unlock the "Shelley's Encore" achievement/trophy in the last level, or by accident during the boss fight, you can do it now before leaving this area. Save the game and step off the edge. As Lara falls, she'll scream several times, and the achievement/trophy will pop.

PASSAGEWAYS WITH MOVABLE BLOCKS: Follow the fleshy passageway forward, then left. Slide down the ramp into a gray-tiled hallway. Pass the movable block in the alcove and continue down the next ramp. (The sound of chomping blades is audible from somewhere above.) Soon you'll come to another movable block. Push it 3 times. Go up the ramp on the right and around the corner to reach the back side of the first movable block you passed earlier. Push it once. Then go around the right side of the block and climb on top of it. (screenshots)

Turn around and take a standing jump to grab the ledge ahead. Pull up into a hallway with a break-away tile (43/51) concealing a spike pit, with chomping blades beyond. (NG+ players get a save crystal here.) Stand at the edge of the solid floor just before the cracked tile and watch/listen to the blades. Start to run through the blades on the second "clang," or just as they begin to open. Continue forward and around the corner. (screenshots)

NOTE: Shattering this break-away-tile contributes to the total for the "After Us The Deluge" achievement/trophy. Just 8 more tiles to go.

Don't go down the next ramp. Instead turn right into a corridor with light and dark tiles. Follow it to the bottom and push the movable block once. Follow the passageway back to the top, turn right, and go down the ramp you didn't take earlier. At the bottom is the block you just pushed, a lava pool on the left, and a red door and switch that are too high to reach. Climb over the movable block and push it twice, so it ends up beneath the switch. Follow the passageway back up and around until you're standing on top of the block you just moved. Throw the switch to open the red door. (screenshots)

CAVE WITH LAVA STREAM & DRAWBRIDGE: Go through into a room with sandy colored slopes and a lava stream running down the center. Straight ahead across the lava is a doorway you can't reach yet. There's a drawbridge spanning this gap, but it's down at the moment. The exit is in the far corner, diagonally opposite the entrance. (screenshots)

For now, take a standing jump to the first flat spot on the right (south) side of the lava stream. Take another standing jump to the next flat spot on the same side. Now take a running jump to the next. (If you're playing with tank controls, be sure to set up this jump by walking forward to the little "lip" where the next floor tile juts upward. Then hop back once and attempt to take one walking step backward. This will give Lara enough run-up for the jump. Otherwise, she'll stub her toe on that jutting floor tile and do a standing jump instead, land on the slope, and slide into the lava.) Alternatively, take a standing jump across the lava stream to the next flat tile on the other side, then take a running jump back to the next flat spot on the south side. Note that Lara will take some damage from the bubbling lava. (screenshots)

When you reach the last flat tile on the south side, turn around, and you'll see that the drawbridge has now been raised over the lava. It is on a timer but not a particularly fast one. You have about 40 seconds to get across the bridge before it collapses again. Do the same jumps in reverse, with the last standing jump landing you on the bridge. Turn right and run through the doorway into a cave. This is SECRET #1, the reward a large medi pack, magnum clips, and a box of shotgun shells (7-9). (screenshots)

NOTE: If this is the only magnum ammo you have in your inventory, be sure to hang onto it for the final boss. You'll need it to unlock an achievement/trophy.

Use the switch twice to raise and lock one section of the bridge in place. Take a running jump across the lava stream back to the entrance (or directly to the first flat spot on the sandy colored slope). Then repeat the jumps along the right (south) side of the slope. When you reach the last flat spot on the right side, jump across the lava and enter the dark tunnel. (screenshots)

DARK TUNNEL WITH BOULDER & BLADE TRAPS: Turn left and start up the long ramp. There's a boulder at the top ready to roll, so advance cautiously. As soon as the boulder starts to move, roll and run down the ramp into the doorway on the right to avoid being squashed. Continue up the ramp where the boulder came from. Turn right, go up another shorter ramp, then stop on the second landing. The next long ramp is another boulder trap. The trigger tile for this one is a little farther up the slope, giving you less time to react once the boulder rolls. So stand at the seam between the landing and the first sloping tile, turn around so the slope is behind Lara, hop back 3 times to trigger the boulder, then immediately run down into the doorway on the left, as the boulder passes behind you. Or, run a few steps up the slope to trigger the boulder, roll, and take a running jump down the slope and into the doorway. (screenshots)

Continue up the slope to the top and follow the passageway to a single break-away floor tile (44/51). Step on it to break it, then quickly hop back. (This one also counts toward the "After Us The Deluge" achievement/trophy.) If Lara has less than a quarter of her health left, use a medi pack. Then safety drop into the Scion room below, taking some fall damage in the process. (screenshots)

SCION & DRAWBRIDGE ROOMS (REVISITED): Shoot the SCION (2). This opens the door opposite the pedestal and sets off a series of tremors. The quake won't actually injure Lara unless it breaks your concentration and she falls or something. Just keep going. (There's also a save crystal in NG+.) (screenshots)

NOTE: Oddly, destroying the Scion counts as a kill on your stats screen.

Exit through the the door that just opened. This leads back to the TIMED DRAWBRIDGE room from the previous level, but now the bridge is locked in place. If you don't care about getting all kills, skip the next section and pick up the walkthrough below at the GAUNTLET OF TRAPS.

If you do want all kills, there are 2 mutants (3-4) on the walkways to the left and right, and a third mutant (5) in the fleshy hallway on the other side of the bridge. Step out onto the bridge to activate the first two, then back up and kill them from the relative safety of the doorway. They shouldn't try to cross the bridge, but if either starts shooting darts or fireballs, sidestep out of the doorway for cover. Cross the bridge onto the tan walkway to trigger the third mutant. Then immediately backflip away firing, as it charges around the corner toward Lara. If you backflip twice, you can then hop back into the doorway of the SCION ROOM and use it for cover if necessary. (screenshots)

NOTE: The passageway where the third mutant spawned now comes to a dead-end a bit farther along. There's also a dead-end passage near the switch that originally opened the door to the SCION ROOM, but there's nothing inside. Also, it is possible to jump down onto the platform where you fought the big mutant earlier, then retrace your steps through the passageways and tunnels. Other than adventure tourism, there's no actual purpose in doing so, since it only brings you back to the SCION ROOM.

GAUNTLET OF TRAPS: When you're ready to move on, step off the drawbridge to land on the black rocks below on the right. Find the opening in the floor near the south wall and safety drop onto a small, square ledge above a lava pool with darts flying back and forth. Turn to face the fleshy wall and take a running jump to grab the horizontal crevice. Or, to avoid possible damage from the leftmost dart trap, take a carefully angled running jump to grab the left side of the flat part of the crevice, between the first two darts. (screenshots)

Traverse to the right along the crevice. It's almost impossible to make this crossing without taking any damage from darts, but with luck you won't lose more than a little health. When you reach the right end of the crevice, drop onto the slippery slope and immediately backflip onto the flat ledge behind to avoid sliding into the lava. As long as Lara jumps immediately without sliding, she should land near the edge of the ledge, safe from the darts. Turn around and run carefully into the doorway between darts. (screenshots)

Pick up the Uzi clips (10) just inside on the left. Then walk down the right side of the slope. This triggers a boulder, which rolls down the left side to land in the lava pool below the swinging blade. Move to the middle of the slope, facing the middle section of spikes on the opposite side of the lava pit. The swinging blade will be on Lara's left. As the blade swings away to the left, take a running jump over the lava and spikes to land on the clear tile beyond the first set of spikes. Walk forward through the spikes, continue on between the lava pits, go around the corner, then then walk to the top of the ramp on the left. (screenshots)

Ahead are more spikes, more lava, and 3 break-away tiles (45-47/51). If you are not achievement/trophy hunting, you don't need to shatter all three tiles. Just walk to the top of the ramp, take one step back from the edge, then take a standing jump forward to land on the leftmost break-away tile. Immediately side flip to the right to land on the right tile, then jump forward into the doorway. The middle tile will remain unbroken. Or, take a carefully angled running jump from the right corner of the ramp to grab the left corner of the ledge by the door, passing over the tiles but not touching them. (screenshots)

If you are attempting the "After Us the Deluge" achievement/trophy, save the game here, just in case. If you're fairly dexterous with the controls, you can shatter all three tiles on one pass. Start by positioning Lara near the back left corner of the ramp, angled slightly to the right. Take a standing jump over the spikes to land on the left tile. Run to the right, over the middle tile, then veer left as you cross the third tile and jump into the doorway. (You can also run straight toward the right wall then side flip left into the doorway.) (screenshots)

Alternatively, break the tiles one at a time. Start by walking to the top edge of the ramp. Then take two walking steps back. Jump forward over the spikes to land on the left tile and immediately backflip onto the ramp. Walk to the top right corner of the ramp, angle Lara toward the middle tile, then take one walking step back. Jump forward onto the tile and immediately backflip onto the ramp. Now, for the third tile, walk to the top right corner of the ramp, angle Lara to face the remaining intact tile, and take one walking step back from the edge. Jump forward to land on the tile. Keep running as you veer to the left and jump into the doorway. Or, instead walk to the top right corner of the ramp and angle Lara to face the third tile. Jump forward to land on it. Pivot a bit to the right, so Lara is facing the wall, and quickly side flip to the left to land in the doorway before the tile collapses. (screenshots)

CONCEALED CREVICE ABOVE LAVA POOL: In the next room you'll find a lava pool with 3 tall, angled blocks standing in it. On a ledge above the far side of the pit you can just make out some items. This is where you're headed, but jumping on the blocks won't get you there. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you're in a hurry or aren't interested in the secret, you can cross the lava pool via the angled pillars. Walk to the edge of the ledge. Take a standing jump down to the first angled block. Hold Jump to hop to the next pillar and the next. Release Jump before you land on the third pillar. It's flat enough that Lara won't slide. Stand near the center of the pillar and take a standing jump into the doorway on the right, as shown here. Then skip to the next section.

If you do want the secret, you'll need to traverse along a nearly invisible crevice in the left wall. It doesn't look like a crack you can grab, but if you scan farther to the right, you can see where it widens. Position Lara with her chest against the left wall and her right foot near the edge. Hop back once. Then pivot just slightly to the right, to face the wall beyond the edge of the ledge. Take a standing jump to grab the horizontal seam in the wall. Traverse to the right all the way across the lava pool. (Don't ask how Lara doesn't end up with third-degree finger burns. #TombRaiderLogic) On the other side, drop down onto the wide ledge. This is SECRET #2: Uzi ammo and 3 large medi packs (11-14). (screenshots)

To get down, walk to the edge above the lava pool and face the entrance and the angled pillars below. Take a standing jump onto the sloping middle block and immediately backflip onto the smaller flat block behind. (There's another save crystal here in NG+). Step back toward the middle of the block to avoid taking damage from the bubbling lava. Ignore the horizontal crevice and take a standing jump from the middle of the pillar into the doorway. Be careful not to run on into the trapped passageway ahead. (screenshots)

GAUNTLET OF TRAPS CONTINUED: Ahead is a combination trap involving 3 break-away tiles (48-50/51) concealing a spike pit, with a pool of lava off to one side, then a swinging blade and a rolling boulder. (Hurrah.) To get through without losing any health, and shatter all the tiles for the "After Us the Deluge" achievement/trophy, stand about one walking step back from the edge of the first cracked tile. Wait for the blade to swing toward you then, just as it starts to swing away, run across the tiles and veer past the blade into the doorway before the boulder arrives. Or, try this: Grab the horizontal crevice above on the left. Traverse along the crevice all the way to the right. Lara will be hanging above the right edge of the first break-away tile with spikes below. Let go to drop onto the cracked tile and immediately side flip to the right twice, shattering all 3 tiles in the process. The boulder should then roll past without harming her. Then you can take your time and run past the blade as it swings away. (screenshots)

Beyond the swinging blade, there's another slope with a boulder perched at the top. Run down the slope and around the corner to the right, ignoring the small medi pack (15) on the ground for now. Once the boulder lands you can take a standing jump or a side flip between the boulder and the corner of the doorway, get the medi pack and jump back the same way. (screenshots)

The next trap involves a slope with a boulder at the top, a swinging blade ahead, and lava pits on either side and at the bottom. To get through without any tricky timing, turn around so Lara is facing the boulder and her back is toward the slope. Step to the right so her right arm and foot are touching the wall. Then slide backwards, holding Action to grab the end of the slope. Lara should take little or no damage from the blade as she passes it. Hang from the end of the slope and wait for the boulder to roll down into the lava pit. Then pull up and press Jump to backflip onto the ledge behind you. (screenshots)

Hop down on the left and step into the doorway. In this room there's another small medi pack (16) on the ground ahead, 4 lava flows, two on each side wall, and a door at the far end. Run forward to the medi pack. Stop and pick it up. The lava flows out behind Lara, but she'll be safe here. Without moving forward or back from the spot where the health pack was, face the red fleshy door and take a running jump toward it. Then run on into the doorway as the remaining lava flows converge behind you. Pull the switch to open the door. (screenshots)

Enter and go to the right. The door closes behind you. Continue to the right (north) end of the tunnel and pick up some Uzi ammo (17). Turn around and run forward past the door, but stop just before the edge of the next lava pit. A boulder will roll down and pass overhead. Walk to the edge of the pit and take a standing jump to grab the opposite edge. Wait for another boulder to roll down into the pit, then pull up. (screenshots)

Continue to the next room, which contains a pool of water and a series of torch pillars. Relax! It's not anything like the Palace Midas torches. You'll be fine. Walk up the ramp to the edge, then sidestep to the left or right so Lara is squarely facing either side of the first flaming pillar, rather than the middle, where the fire is hottest. Hop back, check your angle again, then take a running jump over the first flaming pillar to grab the edge of the longer platform with the second burner. When you pull up, the flame ignites. take a standing jump past the flame. Then take a running jump over the third flame to grab the edge of the ramp on the far side of the room. Pull up and that's that. As long as you manage to stay near the outside edge of the blocks, Lara won't take any damage. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you haven't unlocked the "Tempered Lara" achievement/trophy yet, you can easily do that here. Step into any of the burners to catch fire, then jump in the pool to put it out.

TALL STRUCTURE ABOVE TINY POOL: In the next room there is a red-and-gold structure with a swinging blade in the middle and a break-away tile (51/51) below the blade. Walk down the slope and stand facing the blade and cracked tile. To avoid taking damage from the blade, try to line Lara up with one side of the cracked tile rather than the middle. Hop back, then take two more walking steps back. Wait for the blade to swing toward the side of the tile Lara is facing. Then take a running jump and continue to hold Jump and Forward. Lara will land on the edge of the break-away tile then take a running jump into the opening beyond. (Or, if you have trouble with this, instead walk to the edge, take a standing jump to grab the edge of the break-away tile, which won't start to crack until Lara stands on it. Pull up, and immediately take a running jump into the opening.) This is SECRET #3. Inside you'll find a large medi pack and 2 sets of Uzi clips (18-20). (screenshots)

If you've found all secrets in Atlantis, you'll unlock the "Codex of Atlantis" achievement/trophy here. And if you managed to shatter all of the break-away-tiles in the game, you'll get "After Us the Deluge" as well.

Return to the doorway, walk to the edge, and look down. That eensy-weensy square opening filled with water is where we're headed. Stand in the middle of the doorway, take one walking step back from the edge. Then swan dive (Walk + Jump + Forward) into the tiny pool below. This trick unlocks the "Bullseye!" achievement/trophy. Look at you go! (screenshots)

Pick up the Uzi ammo (21) on the bottom of the pool, then follow the underwater passage until you can surface. Climb out of the water and pick up 4 more sets of Uzi clips (22-25)—and the final save crystal if you're playing NG+. (screenshots)

THE PYRAMID'S APEX - FINAL BOSS: NATLA: Advance into the next room with weapons drawn. Above on the left is your old friend Jacqueline Natla. Only now she's sporting a spiffy pair of wings and shooting fireballs. Use the same basic strategy as with the centaurs: get a lock on her, then backflip and side flip to avoid the missiles. If she moves behind a pillar, chase after her and repeat. If she descends and approaches, try to run out into the open so you'll have room to maneuver. Avoid the tunnels, since she will follow Lara inside, and don't let her pin Lara against a wall or pillar, or it'll be over quickly. (screenshots)

Once her health bar is depleted, and she falls, assess the situation, but don't get overconfident: Natla is not put down so easily. After about 15 seconds, she rises up again to resume the fight. If you've been rushing through the game and are now low on ammo, while she's recovering, you can run into the tunnel in the middle of the west wall (i.e., opposite the gold ledge where Natla first appeared). Here you'll find 6 sets of Uzi clips (26-31) in two separate pickups. Unfortunately this tunnel can't be used for cover, since Natla will follow Lara inside, but you can resupply here in a pinch. You'll hear Natla speak (or see the subtitles) when she wakes up. Hurry outside and take her on again. (screenshots)

Natla: Phase Two (6) isn't able to fly anymore, but she's still plenty aggressive. This time, her Atlantean contraption fires glowing energy darts. Continue to shoot at her with Uzis if possible. Backflip away and flip from side to side to dodge her projectiles, as usual. Meanwhile, keep a careful eye on her health bar. When it's almost depleted, switch to magnums for the last few shots. Finishing her with "her own production guns"—the monogrammed magnums you took from Pierre, and later the cowboy—unlocks the "Curses, Like Chickens, Come Home to Roost" achievement/trophy. Regardless of which weapons you use to kill her, you'll unlock the "Yes, I Can!" achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

NOTES: It's possible for winged Natla to "die" on the high golden ledge on the east side of the room. If this happens, she'll revive there. Without wings, she won't be able to get down, making it more difficult to target her. (screenshot) You can climb up to the tall pillar at the end of the tunnel on the south wall, as described below, and shoot her from there. (screenshot) But Lara is a sitting duck on the pillar. If you're playing NG+, or have run out of health packs, you're better off just reloading and trying again. If you're struggling with Natla, especially in New Game+, check out this useful exploit from B0orisTheSpider.

ESCAPING THE PYRAMID: Now you'll need to climb to the top of the room to exit. First, retrieve the Uzi ammo x6 (26-31) in the west tunnel, if you didn't get it earlier. If you've found all the other pickups in the game, the "Tomb Cleaner" achievement/trophy will pop. (screenshots)

Exit the tunnel and head for the far left (northeast) corner of the big room. Vault up onto near right corner of the black rock pile, when facing the east wall with the gold ledge. (There's a tunnel in the pyramid wall behind the rock pile, but you can ignore it since there's nothing inside.) Turn right and take a running jump to grab the edge of the nearest rectangular pillar. Pull up. Take a running jump to the next pillar, then a standing jump to the next, which is just below an opening in the angled wall of the pyramid. Climb in and follow the passageway up and around to an opening in the floor. Safety drop or carefully step off the edge to land on another, higher pillar. (screenshots)

Take a running jump to the next pillar, just ahead and to the left, then another running jump to the next pillar beyond. Turn left and take another running jump to grab the next pillar, which is also under an opening in the pyramid wall. Pull up, climb into the opening, and follow the passage to another hole in the floor, where you can drop onto the highest pillar. (screenshots)

Take a running jump to the red-and-gold ledge. Climb into the opening above and continue forward to a long ramp. Slide down to end the level and the game. (screenshots)

NOTE: After the final cutscene and credits (props to Core Design and Aspyr!), if you open the passport and page to the right, you'll be able to replay or attempt a New Game+ run. Unlike the original game, which gave you all weapons and unlimited ammo in NG+, in the remastered game, it's more of a Hard Mode. There are no medi packs; all health pickups are replaced with ammo. Enemies, traps, and hazards are more lethal, and the only way to save and heal is by using the blue save crystals placed throughout each level. For additional details, check out this New Game Plus breakdown from Raiding the Globe. If you want an easier run with all weapons and ammo, you'll need to start a regular new game and use cheat codes. Just be aware that doing so will disable some achievements/trophies.

UPDATE HISTORY: 5/28/24 - First major update for the Remastered version. This one includes quite a few strategy updates, including the alternative for the break-away tile section near the beginning of the GAUNTLET OF TRAPS suggested by JDReaper45. Updates made prior to the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered release, including credit for tips sent in by other players, are tracked in the original guide.

DARK MODE: I plan to add optional dark mode for these pages, but my current priority is updating the walkthroughs. Meanwhile, may I suggest a reputable dark mode browser extension, such as Dark Reader? (Download only from trusted sites, like darkreader.org or your browser's web store.)
