Stella's Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remastered," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls.

LEVEL 4: MARGOT CARVIER'S APARTMENT (Classic)

Items: 4, including 1 health item, 2 treasure, Von Croy's Notebook
Kills: none
Upgrades: none
Notebook Entries: 19

Dialogue - Margot Carvier: The level begins with a conversation between Lara and Margot. Lara finds out more about Von Croy's final days and persuades Margot to part with his notebook. You can convince her to hand over the notebook willingly by choosing the non-aggressive dialogue options and insist that you didn't kill Werner. However, you can still get the notebook even if she doesn't give it to you (see below).

NOTE: A number of players of the PC game have reported a recurring lockup during the dialogue with Mlle. Carvier. I'm not sure if any of the patches fix this, but here are a few possible solutions: First, try pressing the Ctrl key (or Ctrl + Alt, or Enter, or Escape) each time the game freezes. Another possible work-around is to disable hardware acceleration for sound and check the option for Basic Core Audio 3D Panning. (From the auto-run screen, click Settings, then the Sound tab, then check/uncheck those particular options.) If this doesn't work, you might try experimenting with other sound settings (e.g., Compatibility Mode, etc.). If none of these fixes work, you are welcome to download a savegame file after the dialogue. That page includes a link to detailed instructions for downloading and installing AOD save files.

When the conversation is over, you have a little over a minute to search the apartment and flee before the police bust in. You might want to save as soon as the conversation ends, so you can reload if necessary without having to go through the dialogue again.

Two brief cut scenes warn you that time is running out. First, you see a police car pull up outside. Then, when you see the gendarmes at the door, you'd better be on your way out. If they catch Lara, she will surrender...Game Over.

Lara won't leave without VON CROY'S NOTEBOOK (1). So if you didn't get it from Mlle. Carvier, retrieve it from the drawer on the right side of the kitchen just below the microwave oven.

Apart from the notebook, you can also find vintage Cognac (2) on the left counter in the kitchen, a diamond ring (3) on the lamp table to the left of the kitchen door and health pills (4) in the desk drawer. Exit through the door at the end of the short hallway to the right of the fireplace. (The other door is where the police come in.)

Cut scene: Lara climbs out a window and flees into the night.

VON CROY'S NOTEBOOK: Once you have the notebook, you can access it by pressing Tab/Select to pause the game and view your inventory. Press Down a few times to select 'Notebook,' Enter/X to open it, direction keys/D-Pad to turn pages, and Escape/Triangle to close the book. It contains Werner Von Croy's jottings, as well as clues Lara picks up as you progress. Note that new entries appear at the BEGINNING of the notebook, not the end. So turn pages to the left to see Lara's notes, to the right to see the entries Von Croy made earlier. At this point, you should have 19 entries.

During gameplay, the notebook icon appears at the bottom right of the screen whenever a new entry is added. I will also attempt to include all new notebook entries in blue. If you're stuck in the game, check the notebook. In the remaster, you'll need to collect and read all the notes to unlock the "Memento Mori" achievement/trophy. I have attempted to cover them all here, but I can't guarantee 100% until I've actually played the remastered game.

Details on using the notebook, along with a list of entries, can be found on this separate VON CROY'S NOTEBOOK page.

UPDATE HISTORY: 1/16/07 - Added possible fix for lockup during dialogue. (Thanks to Simon!). Also made a few other changes for clarity.
4/14/07 - Added the keypress fixes for that same bug thanks to Mark, Larry and Ebbe.
2/6/25 - Expanded the section on Von Croy's Notebook. Added running item, kill, and notebook entry counts, which hopefully will be useful in the upcoming Remaster.
2/20/25 - Added VGCartography's level maps, with permission. Visit VGCartography on DeviantArt and follow on Twitter/X and YouTube for more fantastic game maps.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-naming convention than I do. You'll notice most of the Parisian Ghetto-adjacent areas on the same large map. Later, the elemental levels off the Hall of Seasons are included on the same map as the hub level.
