Stella's Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness Walkthrough

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: At this point I can't guarantee 100% accuracy for this guide. Updates are in progress but will take time. Levels that have been worked on will say "Remastered," rather than "Classic," in the title. In the meantime, I have attempted to provide a running count of all kills and pickups, including totals for health packs, chocolates, sellable items, and cash, as well as notebook entries, which are needed for some achievements/trophies. If I've missed any, I do apologize. Please let me know if you discover anything not mentioned here. Also, in case it's not obvious, these guides are based on classic tank controls, and I have not yet included strats for all achievements/trophies.

LEVEL 18: GALLERIES UNDER SIEGE (Remaster)

Updated: 4/20/25()

LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)*

Angel of Darkness Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

Items: 7, including 1 health item, Respirator, and MAG VEGA AUTOMATIC**
Kills: 19
Upgrades: Sprint ability
Notebook Entries: none

**NOTE ON MAX PICKUPS: The in-game Statistics screen lists 10 possible pickups for this level. To the best of my knowledge, there are only 7. If you didn't use the respirator bug in the LOUVRE GALLERIES level, maybe you could use it here to get more than 2 respirators. I have not tested this.

IMPORTANT: The "More Gas, More Mess" achievement/trophy requires you to "escape the Louvre without using a respirator, healing, or leaving any of Gunderson's men alive." To this end, you may want to save at the beginning and avoid overwriting this save until you've finished. Then play through once with a respirator and health packs to familiarize yourself with the level and obtain all kills and pickups. Save in a new slot. Then reload the first save and do the speedrun for the achievement/trophy. Finally, reload the all-pickups save and continue from there. If you're familiar with the level and only want to do one playthrough, be sure to get the health pills in the lab where you find the respirator. I'm not positive, but I think you need them for the "Tactical Medicine" achievement/trophy (collect all health packs). The first part of this walkthrough covers a regular playthrough with all kills and pickups. Tips for "More Gas, More Mess" are below.

BASEMENT AND STAIRS UP TO THE EXHIBIT LEVELS: Run forward up the stairs. Turn left, then right. Continue upstairs to the exhibition areas. The museum guard (1) in the first open gallery drops a Vector clip (1) when you kill or tase him. Grab it and continue upstairs. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Gunderson's men infiltrate the Louvre with the aid of tear gas and large automatic weapons. Gunderson himself seems immune to the gas.

Continue to the top of the stairs. Kill or tase another guard (2), grab the Vector clip (2) he drops, and follow the hall to a door with poisonous gas leaking through it. Open the door and go through. Lara says, "Can't breathe!" Now you'll need to get one of the RESPIRATORS shown in the short cutscene before Lara runs out of breathable air. (screenshots)

NOTES: At first, the poison gas only gradually chips away at Lara's health, but once her breath meter (blue bar below the health bar) is reduced to half, she'll be poisoned. The health bar will turn green, and she'll lose health more rapidly. (screenshot) At that point, you can use an antidote, but it's only a temporary fix. Antidotes are in your inventory under Health. (screenshot) If you're playing with a keyboard, the antidote hotkey is 6. If you forgot to buy antidotes from the Willowtree Herbalist in the PARISIAN GHETTO, you can use a large health pack to cure poison and heal fully, but as long as Lara is exposed to the toxic vapor, her breath meter will continue to deplete. When it reaches zero, her health will fall rapidly and she'll die.

I'm not sure of the best way to handle this if you have red-green colorblindness. I guess just watch the meters closely, and when breath falls to 50% and health begins to decline, use an antidote a.s.a.p.

If you used the bug in the Louvre Galleries level to get extra respirators, you can equip one immediately from the Items section of your Inventory. However, you must still proceed to the respirator cabinet in the LABORATORY, because for some Tomb-Raiderish reason, opening the cabinet gives you the sprint upgrade, which will be essential later in the game.

Unlike in the classic game, the K2 Impactor taser does not work on Gunderson's commandos. A few can be taken down with sneak attacks, but if you're in a hurry, you'll probably want to shoot everyone who gets in your way.

GAS-FILLED EXHIBIT HALLS: Now you're back in the VESTIBULE with the Archaeological Dig sign. Take out the commando (3) in the doorway on the left. (Three or four shotgun blasts at close range should do it.) He drops the MAG VEGA (3) (not loaded). If you don't care about all kills, just continue through the door behind him into the next gallery (and skip the next 2 paragraphs). (screenshots)

To spawn the next 3 enemies, turn around and go through the doorway on the left, opposite the statue and Archaeological Dig Site sign. Immediately roll to face another soldier (4), who tumbles out behind you. Quickly run back around either side of the doorway. This will shield Lara from 2 more mercenaries (5-6) who approach simultaneously from the far end of the gallery. Deal with the single man. Then engage the pair. Use the shotgun at close range and either wait for them to approach or run out to meet them. As long as you don't step out while they're firing, then blast them quickly, Lara shouldn't take too much damage. Or, if you're low on shotgun ammo, switch to handgun(s). Run forward to engage them, then backflip away firing. Use the doorway for cover if it's convenient. (Also, remember to press Roll to change targets if Lara aims at the wrong guy.) (screenshots)

Other than the first soldier's Mag Vega, none of them drop any goodies, so there's no need to linger. Run through the door on the right side of the VESTIBULE (when facing the statue and Archaeological Dig sign). (screenshots)

As you run through the next gallery, with the large glass case in the middle, 2 more commandos (7-8) slide down ropes from the ceiling. Again, you can run/jump forward and blast them at close range with the shotgun. Or whip out the dual Vectors if you have them. (I would save the Desert Ranger unless you're doing the achievement/trophy run.) Run/jump toward them, engage, and hop back firing. The glass case provides a little cover, though not much. One of them drops a Mag Vega clip (4) when he dies. If you like, you can avoid the next two enemies and just run forward through the doorway beyond the ropes. (Skip the next 2 paragraphs.) (screenshots)

NOTE: You can avoid the 9th and 10th enemies until after you've obtained a respirator, then return to the galleries to kill them. However, I recommend dealing with the 9th man sooner if possible. Letting him live can make the section where you return here later unnecessarily difficult.

If you want all kills, run forward to the doorway beyond the ropes to spawn another mercenary (9) behind you. Switch to the shotgun, if you aren't already using it, and run back to meet (and kill) him. Then run on to the VESTIBULE and confront another solider (10) in the gallery on the left (i.e., opposite the Archaeological Dig sign). Return through the VESTIBULE and the gallery with the glass case. Proceed through the doorway at the far end. (screenshots)

In the small connecting room beyond the dangling ropes, turn left and run forward into the STAIRWELL. Shoot another soldier (11) and pick up another Mag clip (5). Run up the stairs (you can save a little time by jumping up the longer flights of stairs) and proceed through the door at the top. (screenshots)

MUSEUM WORKROOMS & OFFICES: Run forward and shoot the commando (12) patrolling this hallway. Go through the first door on the right into the LABORATORY. Go through the glass doors on the right and turn right to face the the RESPIRATOR (6) cabinet. Grab one and equip it by selecting it from the Items section of your Inventory. Now Lara can breathe without taking damage. Keep an eye on your breath bar, though. When it runs down, you're back to breathing the toxic gas. You should have plenty of time to finish the level before then. (screenshots)

NOTE: The respirator bug (described in the LOUVRE GALLERIES walkthrough) still works, at least in the Steam version. Position Lara in front of the cabinet a bit left or right of center, then press Duck and quickly press Action. Lara should crouch and grab a respirator through the locked door. If you used it earlier, you'll now have 5 respirators in total, and your total item count for this level will be one more than is listed. (screenshot)

When you open the respirator cabinet, Lara also gains the ability to sprint, a special lower-body upgrade. The default Sprint key on Keyboard is / (forward slash). Open Options > Control > Change Controls to view or change the controls on each system.

Return through the automatic glass doors, but before exiting the lab, pick up a package of health pills (7) in the second tall cabinet on the left. Exit the lab, turn left, and run/sprint to the end of the hall where you came in. A brief cutscene shows a light coming on above a door, which happens to be located in the room below. When you regain control, open the door in front of you, and return downstairs. (screenshots)

Follow the short corridor back to the connecting room with the gallery signs, where 2 more soldiers (13-14) are waiting for you to kill them. Again, I like the shotgun at close range, but do what works for you. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you avoided the 9th enemy earlier (in the gallery with the glass case, above), Lara may aim at him now through the wall. This makes fighting the two soldiers more difficult. You can press Roll to change targets, but it's more than a little awkward. Also, if you avoided any of the other mercenaries in the galleries, or missed any pickups, you can go through the door on the right and sweep the area you already visited. The door near the Archaeological Dig sign does not open again, though, so the first part of the level is cut off.

When you're ready to move on, go through the door on the left with the light above it. Save the game before moving forward, since you're about to be mobbed. (screenshots)

ATRIUM WITH GLASS FLOOR: As you advance, another pair of commandos (15-16) descend on ropes from the skylight, and a third soldier (17) spawns on the right side of the room. Run forward and engage. As you fight the first group, 2 more mercenaries (18-19) come up the stairs in the next room and may enter through either of the doorways opposite the entrance. Again, it's partially down to luck, but the shotgun at very close range should help you take them all down quickly, assuming you have enough ammo. When you've killed them all, you're in the clear. (screenshots)

Exit through either of the doorways opposite the entrance. Continue down the wide staircase, then the lower staircase on the left. Almost directly opposite the bottom of these stairs is a doorway leading into a CORRIDOR WITH RED WALLS. There's a ladies' room through the closed door to the right, in case Lara needs to touch up her mascara after all the tear gas. There's nothing useful inside, though. Head for the other end of the red hallway to enter the next gallery and finish the level. (screenshots)

Cutscenes: Kurtis and Lara finally get together...a textbook example of boy meets girl, boy frisks girl and steals painting, boy and girl make daring escape from heavily armed mercs with the aid of a little magic...swoon! Unfortunately it ends badly. They're both knocked unconscious. As Lara's vision fades, we see one of Gunderson's commandos mysteriously transform into Bouchard's doorman and leave the scene.

Lara awakens with Bouchard hovering over her—and an odd crystal dagger beside her on the ground. Bouchard claims he was monitoring the police radio and heard about her predicament. Naturally he rushed down to the Louvre to lend a hand. Lara is not buying his story, though she's not above using a user for a lift. He agrees to take her to Von Croy's apartment. During the ride, Bouchard gets a little handsy but also shares news of another Monstrum killing—this time in Prague. Lara, beginning to put the pieces together, guesses the victim was the art dealer Mathias Vasiley.

When they reach Von Croy's place, Lara insists on going in alone. Bouchard, the dirty dog, uses his cell phone to make a call. He tells the person on the other end, "She's inside now. You can send in the cleaner."

FMV: Lara enters the apartment. When she reaches the mirror, she flashes back on Von Croy's murder, filling in a few of the blanks that she was unable to remember before. She recalls her argument with Werner, then him drawing a gun and yelling at her to get out of the way. The man she saw leaving Rennes' Pawnshop enters the apartment and shoves her aside. The man attacks Werner, whose gun goes flying and lands under a piece of furniture. As Lara drifts in and out of consciousness, the man kills Von Croy and uses his blood to paint symbols on the wall. Now, at least, Lara is sure she's not at fault. But who is? The man who leaves the apartment is not the same one who arrived. This new person has a paler, rounder face and doesn't wear glasses. Mysteries abound!

"MORE GAS, MORE MESS" ACHIEVEMENT/TROPHY: The basic strategy for this achievement/trophy follows the same all-kills route described in the main walkthrough, with a few small exceptions. First, some general tips:

A recap of the sequence, from the point where Lara enters the gas-filled VESTIBULE to the end of the level is included on a separate page with screenshots. If my approach isn't working for you, there are many alternatives on YouTube.

NOTES: As the description suggests, the two museum guards at the beginning of the level are not part of this challenge. The achievement/trophy unlocks during the cutscene with Bouchard.

*NOTE ON LEVEL MAPS: VGCartography's Angel of Darkness maps follow a slightly different level-naming convention than I do. You'll notice most of the Parisian Ghetto-adjacent areas on the same large map. Later, the elemental levels off the Hall of Seasons are included on the same map as the hub level.
