STELLA'S TOMB RAIDER CHRONICLES REMASTERED WALKTHROUGH

LOOKING FOR DARK MODE?

NOTES ON THE REMASTER: I have attempted to provide running kill, item, and secret counts. (Details are in a footnote following the first-level walkthrough.) I have also tried to cover all achievements/trophies, except New Game+. These guides are based on classic tank controls, but I hope they will be useful for those using modern controls. Follow this link for the archived classic guide. Chronicles does not include a "Restart Level" option, so I recommend making a new save at the beginning of each level in case you need to replay. Follow this link for Steam/GOG save files.

LEVEL 8: GALLOWS TREE (Remaster)

Updated: 12/21/25()

LEVEL MAP by VGCartography (used with permission)

Chronicles Remastered Video Walkthrough by Eldincy

Starting Inventory: 3 small medipacks, 1 large medipack
Pickups: 16, including Rubber Tube, Pitchfork, Clapper, and 3 Golden Rose Secrets*
Kills: none

Cinematic: Lara stows away on a boat in order to accompany Father Dunstan to an Irish isle where strange goings-on have been reported.

CHASM: The hole on the right leads down into the area you'll be visiting shortly. Ignore it, since you'll be taking another route and snagging a secret on the way down. Instead, follow the path to the left and approach the edge of the chasm. Note the two whitewashed ledges on the opposite side of the pit. Take a running jump down to the one on the right. (screenshots)

Stand facing the cliff wall and grab the horizontal crevice. Traverse along this crevice to the left and around the corner. Let go and slide onto the flat part of the second whitewashed ledge. Turn to face a third whitewashed slope across the gap. (There's a lovely sunset in the distance.) Take a standing jump onto the slope, slide backward, and hold Action to grab the edge. Let go and drop onto the greenish ledge below. Lara will slide back then stop just before the edge. (screenshots)

Turn right to face a SMALL MANMADE CAVE with a whitewashed interior. Walk carefully to the edge of the green ledge nearest the cave. Take a standing jump with Action to lower Lara's arc so she lands squarely inside the cave. A flock of bats flies out. Don't jump around too much trying to avoid them or you may fall. Instead, try crawling forward toward the golden rose (1) (137/239) (SECRET #1, 19/36). If you then stay crouched near the wall, Lara should take little or no damage. When the bats disperse, pick up the secret and a large medipack (2) (138/239). (screenshots)

NOTES: If you miss a jump and end up at the bottom of the chasm, either reload or climb through the small, square opening in the cliff wall. (screenshot) This tunnel leads back up to the starting point. This area seems to have been inspired by the Giant's Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its distinctive basalt columns.

After getting the secret, drop down to the floor of the CHASM. Go behind the huge stone column with the uneven green ledges (i.e., to the right if Lara's back is to the cave where you found the secret). Pick up a small medipack (3) (139/239). Then make your way to the other end of the chasm and climb onto the block ledge below the square opening. Turn left and walk to the edge of the block ledge. Walk one step back. Then take a standing jump to a flat area on the striped rocks, and another standing jump to the square corner ledge, where you'll find another small medipack (4) (140/239). (screenshots)

Return to the block ledge and pull up into the square opening. Climb through the manmade tunnel back to the start of the level. (screenshots)

LEVEL START (again): Follow the path from the starting point to the rim of the CHASM. Repeat the running jump to the first whitewashed ledge, traverse along the crevice, and drop onto the second ledge. Turn to face the whitewashed slope across the gap. Jump onto the slope, slide back, and grab the edge like you did before. Only this time don't let go. Instead, traverse to the right and around the corner until Lara is hanging above a small, rectangular opening. Let go then immediately press and hold Action to grab the edge of the small opening. Pull up and crawl through. (screenshots)

DARK PASSAGEWAY BETWEEN AREAS: Turn right and climb onto the small, flattish block underneath the stone bridge. Jump straight up and grab the vines growing on the underside of the bridge. Monkey-swing forward until you can drop down in the dark passageway on the other side. Pick up the large medipack (5) (141/239) in the depression on the right. Then slide down the chute. Step forward into an open area with a campfire and an ancient, gnarled tree. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Lara is startled by a ringing church bell and the sudden appearance of a rotting corpse swinging from the tree by a noose. He speaks to her, asking her to find his heart, hidden somewhere below.

IMPORTANT: When you regain control after the cutscene, save the game. Then you can experiment without fear. For the "Impatiens" achievement/trophy, you must avoid taking any damage from the changelings (called "imps" in the official description).

THE GALLOWS TREE AND COVERED WELL: First, be careful not to step too close to the campfire or Lara will catch fire. Also, if she approaches the covered well, she'll trigger the appearance of a changeling (not killed) from inside the barrel. It will follow and attack her, making exploring the area quite a bit more difficult than it has to be. To avoid triggering it, stay on the stone steps or the first row of gray-and-white pebbled tiles below the steps. (The trigger tiles are shown in the section with screenshots.)

Turn around and face the chute where Lara slid into this area. To the left of it is tall, square pillar. Move into the gap between the pillar and the wall of the building. Grab the edge of the sloping wall. Pull up. Then, before Lara can slip off, press Jump to backflip onto the pillar. Up there you'll find a golden rose (6) (142/239) (SECRET #2, 20/36). It's also a good vantage point for scoping out the area. (screenshots)

Drop down, face the covered well, then head into the shallow cave off to the right. (Remember, you can avoid triggering the changeling by staying on the stone steps and the adjacent row of pebbled tiles.) Inside you'll see a crawlspace at floor level and slats running along the ceiling. Skip the crawlspace for now and jump straight up to grab the wooden slats. Monkey swing forward into the high opening. You can let go when the dramatic music plays and a flock of bats appears. Crouch and crawl forward until the bats disperse. Then pull up into the opening on the left. (screenshots)

Quick save here. For the "Well Done" achievement/trophy, you'll need to "perform a clean somersault dive into the well." To do that, walk to the edge. Make sure Lara is squarely facing the well below. Hold Walk, then press Forward + Jump together. Then press Roll to somersault on the way down. If you do it right, the achievement/trophy unlocks as Lara breaks the surface. (screenshots)

NOTES: You have no flares in this chapter, so if you're having trouble navigating underwater, go to Options > Graphics > Brightness and crank it up temporarily. Also, the next area includes rat swarms, which you'll need to avoid for the "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy. So you may want to read ahead to see what's required.

UNDERWATER PASSAGES: Take a breath if you like, then dive down. At the bottom, follow the tunnel forward. Turn right at the first T-intersection, then right again at the second T. Continue along the uneven tunnel as it slopes upward. At the next intersection, turn left. (The vertical shaft is a dead end.) Continue forward until the tunnel ends in a vertical shaft. Swim upward and surface in a small pond. (The small opening near the top of the flooded shaft leads into the nearby shack. However, the water level there is too low to climb out.) (screenshots)

MILL POND AND SHACKS: Face the building with the wooden walkway jutting out over the pond. Swim forward along the left side of the walkway and climb out on the stone ledge. If you swim to the right, a swarm of rats appears. You'll need to avoid them if you want the "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

If you do accidentally spawn the rats, either reload or swim down into the shaft to avoid being bitten. They won't go below the surface. If you like, you can follow the side passageway and surface inside the shack to breathe. Wait for the rats to disperse. (A swarm lasts about 45 seconds.) Then swim back out. (screenshots)

Stand on the wooden walkway facing the left end of the steep wooden slope on the far side of the pond. Take a running jump onto the slope and hold Jump to leap from the slope onto the ledge next to the shack. Crawl inside through the low opening on the left. Pick up a large medipack (7) (143/239) and search the drawers for a RUBBER TUBE (8) (144/239). To avoid the rats, instead of returning through the crawlspace, drop into the water to the right of it. Then swim forward until you can surface. Stay to the right this time (when facing away from the mill building), since the rat trigger tile is now on your left. Climb out of the pool on the far right. (screenshots)

The final rat swarm you'll need to avoid for the "Tail Innocence" achievement/trophy spawns when you approach the ledges on the far side of the pond, beyond the dividing wall. Jump over the wall into the water. Swim forward and quickly climb out on the ledge below and to the right of the doorway. The rats spawn off to the left and swim toward Lara. Turn left and take a standing jump into the doorway. Run into the tunnel and to the right. Then jump onto the flat ledge at the top of the slope. Lara should be safe here. Wait until you can no longer hear the rats chittering (or just count off 45 seconds). If Lara hasn't been bitten by any rats—here or in Rome—the achievement/trophy will unlock at the end of this level. Proceed through the crawlspace at the base of the slope to emerge back at the GALLOWS TREE. (screenshots)

GALLOWS TREE AND WELL (again): Cross to the blocky tower in the far left corner, staying close to the stone steps on the left so you don't trigger the changeling/imp in the barrel near the well. Crawl through the low opening at the base of the tower. (screenshots)

CHALKY TRENCH AND BOARDED-UP BELL TOWER: When you emerge in the next area, follow the path to the left. Ahead is a ruined building with hollowed-out areas below. Move into the hollow on the right and pick up a broken PITCHFORK (9) (145/239). (If you can't spot it using classic graphics, try toggling to modern: F1 on keyboard Start/Options/+ on Xbox/PS/Switch controller.) Climb onto the ledge above the hollow and stand near the boarded-up openings until you see the hand icon (assuming Action Indicators are enabled in the Options menu). Combine the PITCHFORK and RUBBER TUBE to make a CATAPULT (more like a slingshot, really, but maybe that's a dialect thing) and use it here. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you missed the RUBBER TUBE, you'll need to go get it now. See the footnote for details.

Cutscene: Lara assembles her slingshot and uses it to send one of the bells crashing to the ground. She jumps aside to avoid the falling debris.

IMPORTANT: If you want the "Fail Compilation" achievement/trophy, do not pick up the CLAPPER in the BELL TOWER. This achievement requires you to watch three cutscenes in which Lara makes a mistake and pays the price. The first is coming up shortly. (If you don't care about achievements, take the clapper now and just continue following the guide. You'll have one extra pickup for a while.)

Ignore the CLAPPER (later) for now. Drop through the hole behind the bells and follow the tunnel to a HILLSIDE PATH WITH OPEN CRYPTS. Turn around and enter the first crypt, just above the tunnel entrance. Pick up the WOODEN TORCH (not counted as an official pickup) lying the floor. (screenshots)

Follow the path up the hill. The first crypt on the right is empty. The next, on the left, has a small medipack (10) (146/239). You'll need to drop the torch in order to pick up something else. Press Draw Weapon to toss the torch in front of Lara. If you drop it on the chalk path, it's easier to see. Grab the health pack, retrieve the torch, and continue up the path. (screenshots)

The next two crypts have no pickups, but there's a lit torch inside the first one. Go in and light your wooden torch on it. (Stand close and press Action.) At the top of the hill is a closed door and a niche in the stone wall next to it. You'll return here later. For now, throw the lit torch (Draw Weapon) down the hole at the bend in the path. Then climb/drop down after it. (You can just step off the edge while holding the torch, but Lara will take a little fall damage.) (screenshots)

UNDERGROUND TUNNELS: Pick up the torch and follow the passageway to the first intersection. Ahead are some break-away tiles concealing a spike pit. Either run across quickly or detour around the spikes by going up the ramp to the right. On the other side of the spike pit, a flock of bats appears. Toss the torch (not into the spike pit!) and crouch in the corner or just keep moving and suffer a few bat bites. (screenshots)

When the bats disperse, grab your torch and head up the ramp on the right (when Lara's back is toward the spike pit). There's a lit torch on the wall at the top. Drop your wooden torch here, so you can find it easily later. Then head down the ramp to the right. Another flock of bats emerges on the landing. Crouch in the corner again if you want to. Then continue down the ramp toward the spike pit. Crouch near the bottom of the ramp and crawl through the spikes so Lara won't be injured. (screenshots)

NOTE: You can walk safely through the spikes, but Lara will take a little damage when you then have to crouch and stand to get in and out the crawlspace.

Crawl into the low opening beyond the spikes to find a large medipack (11) (147/239) and a golden rose (12) (148/239) (SECRET #3, 21/36). Crawl back out and return up the ramp to the lit torch. Retrieve your wooden torch and follow the ramp down to the left. Turn right at the spike pit. Then follow the long ramps to the ROOT ROOM at the top. (screenshots)

Stand on top of the mound and press Action to use the lit torch to burn the roots. The hanged man's HEART (13) (149/239) drops out onto the floor. Toss your torch away then pick up the HEART. (screenshots)

Cutscene: A nearby door opens and Lara enters to find Father Dunstan arguing with a mysterious voice emanating from a dark pit. The good father tells Lara to meet him on the other side of the bridge, which we'll come to shortly, and use iron to ward off any evil creatures she may encounter.

After the cutscene, get your wooden torch from the ROOT ROOM. Then return through the doorway on the left to the room with the dark pit. Throw the torch into the pit to unlock the "Torchdown" achievement/trophy. (screenshots)

Pick up the small medipack (14) (150/239) in the other doorway leading out of the room with the pit, but don't slide down the chute there. This chute leads back down to the GALLOWS TREE AND COVERED WELL. It's quicker to return through the tunnels the way you came. Go back into the ROOT ROOM. Then exit through the other door. Follow the ramps back down to the spike pit. Skirt the pit by going up the ramp to the left, up the next ramp to the right, then down the other side. Continue left to the ladder and climb out of the tunnels. (screenshots)

NOTE: Check the footnote for the route back if you accidentally slide down the chute or just prefer to take the longer but brighter path.

HILLSIDE PATH WITH OPEN CRYPTS (again): Go to the top of the path. Quick-save before placing the HEART in the niche to the right of the door. (screenshots)

Cutscene: Eerie laughter echoes through the area as the door slides open. Changelings emerge from the crypts along the hillside and scamper up the path toward Lara.

As soon as you regain control, run through the door you just opened. Depending on whether or not you picked up the CLAPPER in the BELL TOWER, you'll see one of two possible cutscenes here:

Cutscene - If you don't have have the iron clapper: Lara tries to slide back the stone blocking the exit, but the changelings overpower her. They disappear (maybe dispelled by her metal belt buckle?) but she's ends up outside the room again. (This cutscene repeats every time you enter the room until you get the CLAPPER.)

NOTE: This is one of three cutscenes you'll need to witness for the "Fail Compilation" achievement/trophy. The other two are in the OLD MILL level. I'm not sure about the console versions, but the Steam game tracks your progress for multi-part achievements like this one. (screenshot) Although this movie shows Lara being attacked, it does not void the "Impatiens" achievement/trophy. As long as you don't take damage from the imps/changelings during actual gameplay, you can get both achievements in the same playthrough.

After the cutscene, either reload your quick-save or avoid the changelings (not killed) as you run back down the hill for the CLAPPER. Drop into the hole at the bottom of the path. Follow the short tunnel and pull up into the BELL TOWER. The CLAPPER (15) (151/239) is lying on the floor between the bells. Return through the tunnel and up the path, again avoiding the changelings, to the room near the heart niche. (screenshots)

Cutscene - If you have the clapper: Lara tries to slide back the stone blocking the exit. The changelings come after her, but she uses the iron CLAPPER to repel them. Now she is able to move the stone and open the exit.

Drop into the tunnel you just opened. Follow it to the bridge spanning the CHASM you explored at the beginning of the level. You'll meet one more flock of bats on the bridge, but don't worry too much about health loss, you'll be back to 100% in a moment. Pick up the large medipack (16) (152/239) and continue across. Climb a few more ledges. Then go up the ramp to the next level. (screenshots)

NOTE: If you didn't take any damage from changelings during this level, the "Impatiens" achievement/trophy unlocks as the next level loads. If you managed to avoid the rat swarms in both Rome and Ireland, you'll get "Tail Innocence" here as well.

MISSING RUBBER TUBE: If you reach the point where you need to combine the PITCHFORK and RUBBER TUBE, but you missed the tube, follow the chalky path back to the crawlspace. Crawl through to the area with the GALLOWS TREE AND COVERED WELL. Then follow the walkthrough above to dive into the well, swim through to the next area, and locate the RUBBER TUBE. Then continue following the main walkthrough to get back to where you left off.

PATH FROM TREE AND WELL TO HEART NICHE: If you slide down the very tempting chute from the room with the demon pit, you'll end up back at the GALLOWS TREE. You can avoid spawning the imp in the barrel by first climbing onto the ledge to the left of the well. Then cross the open area, staying close to the stone steps on the left. Go through the crawlspace at the base of the blocky tower, just like you did earlier. (screenshots) When you emerge from the crawlspace, turn left and follow the chalky path toward the hollow where you found the PITCHFORK. Climb up into the BELL TOWER (ignore the iron CLAPPER if you want the "Fail Compilation" achievement/trophy) and drop through the hole behind the bells. Follow this tunnel to the HILLSIDE PATH WITH OPEN CRYPTS. Continue all the way up the path to the top left. Then pick up the main walkthrough, above.

*NOTES ON PICKUPS, SECRETS, AND KILLS: There are 239 pickups and approximately 62 kills in the entire game. The total number of pickups includes 36 golden rose secrets. All pickups are required for the "Hoarding Order" achievement/trophy. Finding all secrets unlocks an achievement/trophy at the end of each level set (Rome, Russia, etc.) See the footnote following the STREETS OF ROME walkthrough for details on how these statistics are tracked in-game and in this walkthrough.
